Big Milestones For Our Local Stars To Start 2025

The beginning of any year is always a big occasion, but for several of our region’s basketball stars, it has been a HUGE start to 2025. From courts just down the road, to the biggest stadiums in the world, our Canberra stars continue to shine brightly in the game.
It was a big start to January for a couple of our Canberra Nationals’ stars, with Claudea Waihape Andrews and Nikki Worner taking to the AIS Arena for the first time this season with the UC Capitals. Waihape Andrews hit the court on 5 January against Geelong (bagging 2 points late in the game), while Nikki Worner made her WNBL debut a week later, when the UC Capitals defeated Adelaide Lightning on 11 January 2025. Internationally, a few former Canberra Nationals’ will be looking to bring their experience to the 2025 Afrobasket Qualifiers, when Yar Mayen and Nyakiir Dau suit up for South Sudan once again in the next few weeks. And finally, a call-up to the Australian Gliders extended squad rounds out a massive year on-court for Canberra Gunners Wheelchair player, Victoria Simpson. Simpson’s selection comes off the back of a Championship-winning season for the Gunners Wheelchair team.
