On the eve of the 2024 Mitsubishi Motors NBL1 East presented by National Storage Preliminary Finals, basketball fans across the region will be even more excited, as Canberra Gunners Head Coach, Peter Herak, has re-signed to the role for the next two seasons.

Since taking charge of the Canberra Gunners, Coach Herak has guided the team to the 2022 NBL1 East Championship, while being recognised with the 2022 NBL1 East Coach of the Year award; hosting a home semi-final in 2023, and claiming the 2024 NBL1 East Minor Premiership, with a 1st placed finish, while also being nominated for NBL1 East Coach of the Year award for the third straight season.

“I’m excited about continuing in the role with the Canberra Gunners and continue the growth of the program and help to develop players on and off the court.”, Coach Herak said. “It’s been an honour and a privilege to lead the team for the last 3 seasons, and keen for what the next two seasons will bring.”

A major factor in Coach Herak’s re-signing for the 2025 and 2026 campaigns, is the connection with the athletes he coaches and mentors. “I really enjoy being around the guys, I really enjoy working with them, seeing them improve every single day, every single week and helping them to be the best version of themselves on the court and that’s what keeps me coming back.” Coach Herak continued, “The buy-in, commitment and sacrifices of the playing group, and the team culture we have instilled is something to be proud of.”

While the news is exciting for the future of the program, Coach Herak and the Gunners will have a more immediate focus this Saturday – 3 August 2024 – as they take on the Sydney Comets in the 2024 NBL1 East Preliminary Final at Tuggeranong Southern Cross Stadium.  Winner of the match will earn a place in the 2024 Mitsubishi Motors NBL1 East Grand Final on Saturday 10 August 2024 at Penrith Valley Regional Sports Centre.
