Phil Brown Holiday Camps
Phil Brown Holiday Camps are held each school holidays at Belconnen Basketball Stadium.
Camps are aimed at developing players aged 9-17 years with a minimum of 2 years of playing experience.
Phil Brown Holiday Camps focus on covering and enhancing a participant’s skills development, and game understanding. Additional elements that are covered include:
Phil Brown is a former Head of High Performance and Coaching at Basketball ACT, a former AIS Head Coach, a WNBL championship winning coach, and is a former member of the Canberra Cannons.
Participants in the Shooting & Fundamental Skills Camp will be taught and drilled on the basic skills of basketball from the foundation fundamentals of stopping, pivoting, dribbling, passing and shooting to cutting and playing 1 v 1. The camp will focus on the development of correct shooting technique and covers form drills to build the shot technique whilst emphasizing footwork/balance, body alignment and the critical importance of the release phase in developing good shooting form. The coaches will use small-sided games and activities to develop and reinforce the correct execution of fundamentals whilst having fun and enjoying the sport further.
The Phil Brown Super Camp will focus on the development of correct technique in the key foundation skills of shooting, passing, dribbling, pivoting and defensive footwork. The camp will emphasize footwork, balance and key technical areas in developing good shooting form. Participants will develop their 1 v 1 skills including the ability to get their defender off balance and create scoring opportunities. In addition to the individual fundamentals, the basic concepts of team play including fast break, pass & cut and dribble penetration and receivers principles will be taught and practiced through small-sided 2 v 2, 3 v 3 & 4 v 4 games. Coaches will also use competitions & fun activities throughout the camp.
This three-day camp will teach participants the ability to use ball, head, shoulder and foot fakes to get their defender off balance to create a driving lane or shot opportunity. The basic concepts of creating an advantage 2 v 1, 3 v 2 and the principles of game play through 2 v 2 and 3 v 3 breakdown drills will be incorporated and taught to assist campers in their development and decision-making capabilities. Camp participants will learn about the importance of floor spacing, court balance and the importance of ball and player movement in the game. Players will be taught the key offensive actions including the emphasis on dribble penetration & receiver’s principles and cutting principles. Each session will include some 3 v 3 and 4 v 4 game play activities to develop players “game sense”.
The two-day specialist camp focuses on the development of correct shooting technique and covers form drills to build the shot technique whilst emphasizing footwork/balance, body alignment and the critical importance of the release phase in developing good shooting form. Camp participants will work on shooting the ball off the pass, off the dribble, in addition to developing correct lay-up technique with a particular emphasis on shooting the lay-up with the non-preferred hand. The Shooting Camp incorporates competitions so camp participants have fun while learning and practicing their shooting skills.
